Benedict made his way into the drawing room some few minutes later, after taking some time to reflect. Had he imagined disappointment in her face when he told her he had chosen a bride? He did not think she would accept him yet, but he might wear her down some day. She had seemed almost friendly to him tonight.
He would have to thank Easton for bringing them back to Wyndham. He and Jolie had been thrown together often here, which was only natural since the younger set were finding more amusement together.
He must have been outside longer than he thought, for the drawing room was deserted and the servants were tidying up. He walked on through to Easton’s study, where Lord Fairmont and Easton were discussing Lord Dannon.
“The others have gone to bed?” Benedict asked as he strolled to an armchair and sat down.
“They retired with Jolie. It was a tiring day, I hear,” Easton said.
“It is true, then?” Lord Fairmont asked.
“About Dannon and Lillian?” Benedict queried as he examined his nails. “They are back in the country, strolling around like besotted puppies and trying to extort money from me, if that is to what you refer.”
Fairmont slammed his glass down on the desk. “Why are you not as angry as I?”
“I suppose because I am the one Lillian hurt, whereas Dannon hurt someone you love. Not to mention that I have been angry for over a decade.”
Fairmont reddened and he sat back down. “I beg your pardon. I, of all people, have no right to accuse anyone of indifference. But I refuse to sit complacently while they stroll about and he is allowed to hurt more innocent victims.”
“Lillian is hardly innocent,” Benedict reminded his friends.
“Persons of his mettle move on when they tire of their game. I will never be the one to say people cannot change, but they appear to be up to trickery.”
“What can we do about it? Lillian refused my generous offer, Dannon has Prinny on his side, and murder is not as rewarding as one might think.”
“We can make life extremely uncomfortable for them,” Fairmont suggested.
“That would assume they either have a conscience or care. They are already cut in polite circles.”
“I refer to finding a way to cut off his funds,” Fairmont said. “Prinny will have little use for Dannon if he is poor. My father, you, Easton, and I—four of the wealthiest peers in the kingdom—can find a way to make him wish he were dead, or at least very uncomfortable.”
“Lillian would at least move on to greener pastures,” Benedict agreed. “Tell me what you need of me. Hughes is rather astute at investigating matters. He can be at your disposal.”
“Excellent. I have a strong suspicion there is more to Dannon and Lillian’s re-emergence than meets the eye.”
